Understanding What The Lab Tests Are For

Tests that help identify immune system dysfunction, deficiency or autoimmune disorders

Section 1: Lab tests that help identify immune system dysfunction, deficiency or autoimmune disorders

Test NameLab CodeDescription
Complete Blood Count (CBC)6399A broad screening to check for disorders such as anemia, infection and many others
Immune Panel (Lymphocyte Subset Panel I) 7197Evaluates cellular immunocompetency in suspected cases of primary and secondary immunodeficiency states. It is helpful in diagnosing autoimmune disorders
NK Cell Activity

37088

34184

Natural Killer Cells are a type of cytotoxic lymphocyte that constitutes a major component of the innate immune system. They play a major role in the rejection of tumors and cells infected by viruses
Sedimentation Rate (ESR)809Common blood test that is used to detect and monitor inflammation in the body. Significant in non-inflammatory conditions.
C-Reactive Protein4420Measures levels of inflammation in the body
Quantitative Immunoglobulins(IGG, IGA, IGM, IGE)

7083

542

Substances known as antibodies made by the body's immune system in response to bacteria, viruses, fungus, animal dander or cancer cells.  Antibodies attach to the foreign substances so the immune system can destroy them.
IgG SubClasses Panel7803Immunoglobulin IgG SubClasses
Alpha Interferon, EIA34887Proteins made and released by lymphocytes in response to the presence of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites or tumors
Herpes virus Type 6 Antibodies (IgG)34282HHV-6 is a distant herpes virus that infects and kills NK cells, a potential strategy to reduce the natural immune surveillance of the host.  By directly killing NK cells, HHV-6 may play a role in the NK cell defects.
Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF)34485A cytokine involved in systemic inflammation.  The primary role is in the regulation of immune cells.

Section 2: Lab tests that help identify the most common medical problems caused by immune system dysfunction,                                   deficiency  or autoimmune disorders

Test NameLab CodeDescription
Comprehensive Metabolic Panel10231A blood test that measures sugar (glucose) level, electrolyte and fluid balance, kidney function and liver function.
ANA IFA Screen with Reflex to Titer249Help screen for autoimmune disorders and is most often used to diagnose lupus erythematosus (SLE)
Herpes virus Type 1 & 2 Antibodies6447Neurotropic and neuroinvasive viruses.  They persist in the body for the life of the carrier by becoming latent and hiding from the immune system in the cell bodies of nerves.
Epstein-Barr Virus Antibody (IgG/IgM)

8474

8426

Used to diagnose mononucleosis (Mono), EBV infection, and to help distinguish between EBV and another illness with similar symptoms.
Anti-Streptolysin O Antibody (ASO)265This titer measures antibodies against streptolysin O, a substance produced by Group A Streptococcus bacteria.
Rubella Virus Antibody (IgG)10268Rubella is an acute exanthematous viral infection of both children and adults which has the potential to cause fetal infection with resultant birth defects.
Measles Virus Antibody (IgG)964An acute infection caused by the Rubeola Virus with an incubation period of 10-14 days causing cough, coryza, fever and a maculopapular rash that begins several days after the initial symptoms appear.
Mumps Virus Antibody (IgG)8624An acute illness characterized by infection of the salivary glands (parotitis) , high fever and fatigue. One-third of infections are asymptomatic.
Gliadin Antibody Panel (IgG, IgA)8889Present in the serum of those with hypersensitivity to gluten in the diet (wheat)
CMV Virus Antibody (IgG) with Reflex to IgM)37678 A common virus that infects which a healthy immune system can hold in check otherwise the virus can become active and cause CMV disease.
Cozsackle B Virus (1-6) Antibodies7656Viruses that can cause rashes, pharyngitis, meningitis and myocarditis
Thyroid Panel with TSH and T-37444Used for diagnosing hypothyroidism (underactive) and hyperthyroidism (overactive) thyroid gland
